Former Afromedia Director Gets 7 Years For Fraud - Crime

A Lagos high court sitting in Ikeja has sentenced Alhaji Mohammed Gobir, a former director of Afromedia Plc, to 7 years imprisonment for a multi-million naira fraud.

Gobir was arrested in September 2015 by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at his Ikoyi Lagos residence after an investigation into what was described as one of the most elaborate frauds in Nigeria’s corporate sector.

Delivering judgement on Tuesday 8 July 2025, the presiding judge, Raliat Adebiyi, found Gobir guilty on all the 17 counts filed against him by the EFCC.

The charges bordered on stealing, obtaining money by false pretence, forgery, and possession of fraudulent documents.

According to the petition, Gobir fraudulently promised to invest ₦1 billion in Afromedia but instead stole huge sums including $3.5m, ₦514.4m, $2.1m, and £51,000.

Judge Adebiyi noted that the scheme is a “grave breach of trust and a betrayal of fiduciary duty”.

The judge ordered the convict to pay restitution of $1 million and ₦123 million for the convictions and ordered that the sentences run concurrently.

Reacting to the judgement, the EFCC described the verdict as a “watershed moment” in the fight against economic crimes and a clear message that no individual is above the law.
