NIGERIA'S SILVER JUBILEE ANNIVERSARY OF DEMOCRATIC RULE: 25 YEARS OF DEMOCRACY
No doubt Democracy is defined as the Government of the People by the People for the People, simply put Government that derives its legitimate authority from the people which is symbolized by periodic elections where people exercise their constitutional franchise, From colonial rule Nigeria officially began its democratic experiment from the year 1922 with the formation of Nigerian National Democratic party founded by Nationalist leader Herbert Macaulay which began a campaign for independence from colonial rule, years after we have had series of regional elections culminating in independence in 1960 but sadly after the Military struck on January 15, 1966, which ended the First republic which saw to the suspension and abrogation of 1963 Republican constitution the military governed Nigeria for 13 years from 1966 to 1979 and later truncated the second Republic in 1983 with Military rule lasting till 1999 in total we had Military rule for 29 years…The major casualty of Military governance is suspension of the Parliament which is a direct representation of the electorate where laws are made for the Good governance of the People coupled with oversight of the Judiciary and Executive arms of Government in the spirit of separation of Powers…In my own opinion, I will rate Military rule too badly for the bulk of the Underdevelopment in Nigerian society today from the Dependency on Crude oil, Civil War, the largely unitary state which Nigeria has become today, Huge infrastructure deficit, to the corruption of which cost Nigeria a whopping $350B lost in Oil revenues...It is interesting to note that Nigeria is West Africa’s largest democracy of its huge population a region described as the “Coup Belt of the World” very notorious for Military intervention in Governance, as we speak today MALI, GUINEA, BURKINA FASO & NIGER are all under Military rule with the Military leaders stay put to power after reneging on several promises to restore democratic governance in those countries, most recently Senegal just concluded its General elections as it has remained the only Country in West Africa that has avoided Military governance since independence in 1960...
