THE GRAND CORRUPTION MENACE IN THE NIGERIAN SOCIETY
TIME TO ENACT AND ENFORCE STRINGENT PUNISHMENTS TO DETER GRAFT IN THE COUNTRY…
In recent times the Nigerian state has been the weight of Graft allegations from the Former accountant general of the federation Ibrahim Idris, who allegedly stole a whopping sum of N110B was later arrested and currently facing trial where he was reported to have returned N44B to the Nigerian coffers, the story of Director General of Nigeria Social Protection Agency(NSIPA) who allegedly diverted the sum of N44B to private account, the immediate Past Minister of Humanitarian Affairs,Disaster Management and Social Development Haija Umar Farouk who superintended over the diversion of N27B by one James Okwuete a contractor to the Ministry where funds where allocated to a school feeding programme during COVID 19 Pandemic when students where at home under the imposed lockdown by the Federal Government, speaks volumes of the huge corruption menace threatening the fabric of the Nigerian society where millions of Nigerian citizens continually live in abject poverty with stealing of public funds growing at rate so alarming, the recent suspension of Dr Betta Edu of the Minister of Humanitarian affairs and Poverty Alleviation over the recent N535M allegation which borders on diversion of funds for transfers to vulnerable Nigerians under social register scheme.
The solution to the corruption menace is to enact very stringent legislation such as life imprisonment or long terms behind bars to punish looters of public funds nationwide, this measure will drastically reduce the incidents of graft in the country, diligent prosecution by Anti-Graft agencies of offenders, also the introduction of strident financial regulations across the board to prevent unscrupulous individuals from having access to huge public funds.
The role of the Judiciary in accelerating the dispensation of Justice where corruption cases are speedily disposed of will help the corruption fight immensely, this will prevent cases from being unnecessarily delayed which has led to longer years in determining a graft case.
