BETTY ANYANWU AKEREDOLU: ADA OWERRI WIDOWHOOD AT 70
The passing moments of life remind us about the lessons of history, the transient nature of power, and its abuse by the ‘’Children of Men”…The recent events in the Sunshine State where the State was almost on the verge of collapse by forces loyal to the deceased former Governor of Ondo State Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu from September 7 2023 to December 13 2023, when it took national outcry and intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to solve the constitutional logjam in Ondo State, this incident reminiscent of the late president Yaradua debacle in 2010 when the then President Of NBA Rotimi Akeredolu SAN was a strident critic of Yaradua and demanded the resolution of the crisis then only for the same scenario to repeat itself in the Akeredolu saga, one character that was dominant in this theatre of absurd was the wife of former Governor Betty Anyanwu Akeredolu born 70 years ago fondly remembered by admirers as Mama Fowoso,Digital mama,Mama Brecan,Mama Bemore equally disdained by most residents of the Sunshine State as very stingy, ambitious and a power drunk personalty who wielded enormous powers while her husband held sway as Governor of Ondo State from February 24 2017 to December 13 2023…
Mrs. Betty Anyanwu Akeredolu then a young lady of Igbo extraction met and married the late Governor Akeredolu a Yoruba Tribe from Owo Kingdom, in a country where ethnic suspicion is rife and filled with bitterness, she alongside Akeredolu tied the knot in the year 1980 stuck together for 43 years as couples until his shocking demise on December 27, 2023.
The role played by her during her husband’s tenure as Governor was very monumental, consequential and influential alongside her son Babajide Akeredolu, she brought her NGO BRECAN which she founded after her survival of breast cancer in 1997 a platform, to which she has continually used in raising funds to drive awareness and treatments of various incidents of cancer ailments, a move many query was used to extort citizens of Ondo State who argued she had enough resources and contacts to mobilize funds for her NGO rather than seek funds from the people of Ondo State in the name of spurious donations Mrs Betty Akeredolu did not deem it fit to build a single cancer treatment and research center in the entire Ondo State that would have served as a timeless legacy in her honour when she can do such with donations and grants from well meaning individuals alongside corporate entities locally plus globally, despite making so much noise about Breast cancer scourge across the State even the most vilified First Lady Of Nigeria Hajia Turai Yaradua built a huge medical facility alongside Airport Road in Abuja , rather she was notorious for embarking on all manner of programmes, initiatives and propaganda that will evaporate into thin air once she is no longer First Lady of the State.
In her stead appointments and juicy contracts in the State were at her beck and call, with all manner of people of different persuasions flocking to her palace seeking favor or the other, recently a former aide of Akeredolu one loquacious Doyin Odebowale made allegations that Betty Akeredolu and Son Babajide collected huge sums of money from the present commissioner of Energy and Mineral resources Rasaq Obe an Indigene of Ifedore Local Government to facilitate his appointment as commissioner in the Sunshine State..
In a move many saw as rather unbecoming, unduly ambitious, and greedy when she sought the senatorial ticket of Imo East Senatorial district in her native Imo State, where she wanted to be Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and First Lady of Ondo State simultaneously a move rather absurd even in other States of Nigerian Federation where wives of former Governors only contested for Senate after their husbands left office a few examples were Senator Oluremi Tinubu of Lagos State now First Lady of Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mrs. Ebele Obiano former First Lady of Anambra State and Senator Zainab Kure of Niger State…Now the die is cast she is no longer the first lady of Ondo State all the privileges, opportunities, and advantages that came on the heels of being the wife of a State Governor have all disappeared into oblivion gone with 2023 the years she coincidentally clocked 70 years, with the stark reality of a private citizen going into insignificance now stares her in the face as “Indeed Power Has Changed hands” sorry “ADA OWERRI’’ now left to mourn as a WIDOW at least for the rest of her life……Sorry “MACBETTY”
