AFOLABI TAJUDEEN ADEOLA: CELEBRATING A CORPORATE TITAN AND COLLOSUS AT 70
It is indeed life’s reality that Men of excellent quality are most cases very limited supply especially in a country like Nigeria, where so many of our compatriots are given to the lure of selfishness and very destructive tendencies, one man stands out in his journey of 70 years on planet earth his name is no other than Afolabi Tajudeen Adeola fondly called Fola Adeola by his litany admirers across the world, for a man who rose from the ashes of poverty in his rustic enclave of Abeokuta Present day Ogun State hawked through the streets with his siblings to eve a living rising to the peak of corporate Nigeria through a dint of hardwork and excellence with his humble beginnings becoming a chartered accountant receiving training and leadership from some of the finest professional entities in the World..
Fola Adeola founded The Guaranty Trust Bank arguably one of the biggest financial institutions on the African continent alongside his friend of blessed memory Tayo Aderinokun also from the same Abeokuta homestead, he later resigned as CEO of GTBANK after instituting the culture of excellence, professionalism, and innovation which has made the bank a worthy leader in the financial space making a culture of succession planning which he pioneered in the financial industry, he later founded Fate Foundation,ARM Group, several Multi-Billion Naira enterprises he played a key role in founding the multi-billion naira pension industry in Nigeria where he was the pioneer chairman of Pension Commission of Nigeria(PENCOM) in 2004...
He has provided mentorship to several other outstanding corporate leaders notably Aigboje Aig Imoukhede and Herbert Wigwe of Access Bank Fame, Segun Agbaje current CEO of Gtco Holdings who have built multi-billion enterprises that have created thousands of job opportunities.
Fola Adeola is noted for his humility, simplicity, and excellent grasp of life issues he was instrumental in setting up the KOWA party to draw a new crop of leaders into the Political scene who will provide quality leadership to Nigeria’s failing society.
His desire to see the drastic reduction of poverty led him to found Fate Foundation after his course in New York on ideas and strategies in drastic reducing poverty in Nigeria which has assumed alarming proportions and today has made a tremendous impact in creating millions of job opportunities which in turn has turned thousands of lives around. He ran unsuccessfully as Vice Presidential candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria in 2011 Nigeria’s presidential elections in addition some of his outstanding achievements in life include Adeola serving as a member of the Global Advisory Committee on Philanthropy of the World Economic Forum for four years. In 2001, he was invited to join twenty-four other business leaders for the Aspen Institute ISIB Annual Business Leaders Dialogue in Aspen, Colorado. In May 2004, he was appointed Commissioner on the Commission for Africa by British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
He was a Council member and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria; and a Fellow of the Institute of Directors of Nigeria.
Honours and awards
He was nationally decorated as Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) in December 2002 by President Olusegun Obasanjo. He has an honorary doctorate from Nkumba University, Entebbe, Uganda. Banker of the Decade in 2009 by the Vanguard Newspaper group. Distinguished Famous Alumni award by Yaba Tech. Zik Leadership in 2003. This Day Awards 2011 – Change Makers in Social Entrepreneurship.
Personal life
Adeola is married to Hajara, and has six children.
